Clatsop County Board of Commissioners issued an emergency declaration at their January 24 Regular Board Meeting for the geographic area served by Evergreen Acres Water Services, which supplies a rural, unincorporated area and has an older system infrastructure. 

The water system is privately operated with limited funding and resources. Last Friday, a technical expert report indicated that the well may be failing. 

An emergency declaration allows Clatsop County to tap into state resources to address this public health emergency.

Clatsop County became aware of the disruption of the water services for the Evergreen Acres subdivision on January 4, 2024, when it learned that the area has been under a boil water notice since October 2022. 

Since then, the County has been coordinating with various local and state agencies to restore safe drinking water to the community. Resources have been provided by the cities of Astoria, Cannon Beach, Seaside, Clatsop County and the Oregon Department of Human Services to raise awareness regarding the boil water notice and provide potable water to residents.

Due to the public health impacts on this community, $50,000 of Clatsop County pandemic American Rescue Plan Act funding will be allocated for repairs and to assist returning the water system to reliable and safe operation. All expenses must be pre-approved by the County.

On Monday, Jan. 22, a seafood facility in Ilwaco, Washington, caught fire, destroying fishing gear and damaging a building.

Local assistance is available to support those who have been financially impacted.

Clatsop County Fair Board is sponsoring a poster contest for the 2024 fair theme, Forest to the Farm. The contest is open to all ages and the deadline to submit an image is March 1, 2024.

The winning individual will receive two fair concert tickets, two fair season passes, meals for two at the 4-H Chicken Coop and their biography in the fair guide.

This year’s fair runs from July 30 through August 3.

Did you know that 93% of cervical cancers could be prevented by screening and vaccination?

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and is your reminder to get screened for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer occurs most often in people over 30. 

Long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. Screening tests and the HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer. 

For uninsured or underinsured individuals, cervical cancer screening is available free through Oregon Health Authority’s ScreenWise program by calling 877-255-7070.

The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed January 26, 2024, as Cascadia Awareness Day in Clatsop County. 

Cascadia Earthquake Awareness Day is an event to encourage people to create a disaster plan and prepare for emergencies, specifically by thinking about the last large rupture of the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

At around 9 p.m. on January 26, 1700, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.7 - 9.2 occurred in Clatsop County. The severe shaking resulted in subsidence—the land dropped by about 6 feet—and a tsunami which arrived ashore 15-25 minutes later. 

Experts cannot predict when the next “big one” will occur, but there is agreement that the region is overdue for another catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.

Free Meal and Services at January 30 Event

Project Homeless Connect is a free annual event that brings community services to individuals and families. This year’s event is 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, at the Seaside Convention Center.

Free services include medical and dental care, a hot meal and warm clothing, haircuts and vaccines for doggy care. Free transportation to the event is provided by Sunset Transportation District.

The event is sponsored by Clatsop Community Action, Columbia Memorial Hospital, Providence Seaside Hospital, Clatsop County Public Health, Columbia Pacific CCO, and Care Oregon.

Did You Lose Food During the January Storm? Help May Be Available

SNAP households that lost food due to winter storms or power outages may be eligible for replacement benefits.

• If you had to throw away food purchased with SNAP due to the recent winter storms or power outages, you can request replacement benefits to purchase new food
• You must request replacement benefits within 10 calendar days of the food loss

• Cleaning Sunset and Del Rey beach approaches. The approach will be closed during cleaning, so please use an alternate approach
• Brushing on Youngs River Road
• Ditching in the Svensen and Jewell area
• Performing shoulder work at the intersection of Youngs River Road and Olney Cutoff
• Continuing storm cleanup in the Jewell area

An appointment is required prior to coming in for new passport processing. Routine service can take 6-8 weeks or longer. Expedite service can take 2-3 weeks.
